Several smuggled luxury cars seized by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) last year will be destroyed.
BOC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña said the order to destroy the luxury cars came from President Rodrigo Duterte.
“This is a presidential directive coming from the President and I agree. These will be destroyed to send a strong message to the smugglers, para hindi na sila uulit-ulit pa [so they won’t do it again],” Commissioner Lapeña said.
The commissioner explained that seized smuggled vehicles that are auctioned off usually end up in the hands of the smugglers again.
The luxury cars such as McLaren sports car, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Range Rover were confiscated last year by BOC personnel at the Manila International Container Port for undervaluation and failure to present documentary requirement from the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
